How do I Winterize My Pool?

Winterizing your pool is essential to protect it during the colder months and ensure it’s in good condition when you reopen it. Follow these steps to properly winterize your pool:

1. Remove Pool Accessories:

  • Take out accessories such as skimmer baskets, cleaners, ladders, steps, and solar blankets.

  • oHose off any dirt and algae, let them dry, and store them safely for the winter.

2. Deep Clean the Pool:

  • Remove all leaves, silt, and debris from the pool.

  • Use skim nets to clean the surface and a pool vacuum to clear debris from the bottom.

  • Thoroughly brush the pool’s floor and sides.

3. Adjust Water Chemistry:

  • Test the water chemistry a week before closing the pool.

  • Ensure the following levels:

  1. Alkalinity: 80–150 parts per million (ppm)

  2. pH: 7.2–7.6

  3. Calcium hardness: 175–225 ppm

  4. Chlorine: 1–3 ppm

o Balance the alkalinity before adjusting pH.

4. Lower the Water Level:

o If you’re not using a skimmer cover and live in a freezing area, lower the water level:

 About a foot below the skimmer for mesh covers.

 Half a foot below the skimmer for solid covers.

o Depending on how you remove water, this process may take a day or two.

5. Drain and Store Equipment:

o Drain all equipment to prevent water expansion during freezing temperatures.

o Clear water from pool lines using a blower and plug them with expansion plugs.

o Consider adding pool antifreeze for extra pipe protection.

By following these steps, you’ll ensure your pool is well-prepared for winter, preventing damage and making the reopening process smoother. 🌊🏊‍♂️🍂
